Sheffield United’s longest-serving women’s player Maddy Cusack died age 27
It is with great sadness that Sheffield United Football Club announces the passing of Maddy Cusack, the team’s longest-serving women’s player and vice-captain, at the age of 27. Maddy had just begun her sixth season with the team in the Women’s Championship and was recently named vice-captain. In addition to her role on the team, Maddy also served as a marketing executive for the club. The club is devastated by her loss.
Maddy’s brother, Richard Cusack, expressed his grief on social media, stating, “My beautiful sister. May you rest in peace Maddy.”
Sheffield United Football Club released an official statement on their website, expressing their deep sorrow at Maddy’s passing. The statement noted that Maddy had been a respected player on the team since 2019 and had reached the milestone of 100 appearances for Sheffield United Women last season.
Cusack joined Sheffield United in January 2019 during their inaugural season in the women’s second tier. Last season, she achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first woman to reach 100 appearances for the club. As the longest-serving player in the current squad, she recently signed a contract extension in July.
Expressing her deep affection for the club, Cusack stated, “I think everyone is aware of my immense love for this club. Sheffield United is my home.”
Cusack’s last match for the Blades was on August 27, resulting in a 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic. However, she did not participate in subsequent matches against Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers, nor in their victory over Lewes earlier this month.
Stephen Bettis, the chief executive officer of Sheffield United, expressed his profound sadness, stating, “This news is devastating for everyone associated with Bramall Lane. Maddy held a unique position within several teams at Sheffield United and was highly regarded by all who had the pleasure of interacting with her. Her exceptional character and professionalism were a testament to her family, and she will be greatly missed.”
In light of this tragic news, the club is committed to providing extensive support to Maddy’s family, friends, and colleagues as they process and move forward. Sheffield United will continue to hold private discussions regarding appropriate tributes and ways to celebrate Maddy’s life. The club and Maddy’s family kindly request privacy during this difficult time and will refrain from making further comments.
Cusack’s career also included a period at Birmingham City. The club expressed their sadness in a formal statement, stating, “The club is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of former player Maddy Cusack. Our thoughts are with Maddy’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time.”
Leah Williamson, the captain of the England women’s team, joined others in paying tribute to Cusack. On X, formerly known as Twitter, Williamson wrote, “Sending my heartfelt condolences to Maddy’s family during this terrible time!”
Sue Campbell, the FA’s director of women’s football, expressed her devastation upon hearing the news of Cusack’s passing. She conveyed the condolences of the FA, the Lionesses, the Women’s Super League, and the Women’s Championship, stating, “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Maddy’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone at Sheffield United. Maddy also represented England at various age levels, and we will honor her memory at an appropriate time. We are in contact with the club and will continue to provide them with our unwavering support during this incredibly sad period.”
