Welsh Trotters becoming attraction in their own right
A group of individuals have garnered significant attention by donning costumes resembling the cast of the renowned comedy sitcom, Only Fools and Horses. The inspiration for this endeavor stemmed from Matthew Colwill, aged 41, who initially chose to emulate the iconic character Del Boy, famously portrayed by David Jason, during a day out with his companions.
However, a video featuring Matthew and his friend James Taylor, who was dressed as the character Rodney, gained immense popularity on social media in July. Subsequently, the duo joined forces with two other individuals impersonating characters from the show to form The Welsh Trotters.
The group’s achievements have been consistently on the rise, surpassing the expectations of Matthew Colwill. In an interview with WalesOnline, the individual resembling Del Boy elaborated on the significance of the BBC comedy program to him.
Matthew, a resident of Caerphilly, expressed his deep admiration for the renowned television series Only Fools and Horses. From his childhood days until now, he has remained an ardent fan, captivated by the show’s comedic brilliance, the dynamic energy of its characters, and the captivating storylines.
When asked to single out a favorite episode, Matthew found himself unable to choose, as his affection for each installment runs equally deep. However, he did not hesitate to declare Del Boy as his most beloved character. Matthew identified with Del Boy on a personal level, noting the striking similarities between their lives. Both residing in council estates and occupying modest flats, they also share the experience of owning a well-worn vehicle. Moreover, Matthew recognized a kinship in their personalities, as Del Boy’s opportunistic nature resonated with his own inclination for taking chances.
In July, Matthew and his companions were organizing a day trip, commonly referred to as a “jolly boys’ outing,” to Weston-Super-Mare. This excursion was inspired by their preferred television program’s Christmas special episode, in which Del Boy and his associates visit Margate.
To add a unique touch to the occasion, Matthew’s acquaintance, Daniel Hackney, requested him to attire himself as Del Boy, while he requested James Taylor, another friend, to dress up as Rodney, the younger brother of the market trader.

Matthew recounted his experience of organizing a jolly boys’ outing to Weston-Super-Mare at the end of July. He shared that his friend Daniel Hackney had requested him to dress up as Del Boy, and he agreed to it. He purchased a red polo neck jumper, a sheepskin coat, a flat cap, and some jewelry from Amazon to complete his look. Matthew was pleased with his appearance and even his parents thought he resembled Del Boy. His friend James Taylor also dressed up as Rodney, despite Matthew’s initial doubts.
During their journey to Weston-Super-Mare, Daniel recorded a video of the two friends crossing the road in Bedwas, which went viral on social media, garnering over three million views. Matthew was surprised by the overwhelming response and the attention they received from people who wanted to take photos with them.
Their stint as Del Boy and Rodney did not end there. They were invited to make an appearance as the characters for a special event at Bedwas Rugby Club, where they were surprised to find other familiar characters from the show waiting for them.
According to Matthew, their primary objective is to continue performing at various events and venues, with the intention of bringing joy and raising funds for charitable causes. Matthew further expressed, “We have actively engaged in numerous charitable endeavors, and despite that, people are still booking us. Our sole desire is to entertain individuals and generate financial support for charities.”
“It makes me feel really good, making a difference in people’s lives – whether that is through a bit of joy or raising money, that’s the main thing. And for me personally, it has changed my life. Without sounding dramatic, I’m doing more stuff over the weekends and I’m meeting new people.
“I never thought I’d be in a band, but here we are. Who knows what will happen in the future? Perhaps this time next year we’ll be millionaires!”
