Victoria and her husband David have revealed their initial attraction to each other in a new teaser for the Beckham Netflix documentary. The couple first met at a charity football match in 1997 and now provide insight into their first encounter and their thoughts about one another.
In a relaxed setting on a sofa, Victoria shares, “Attending the games was really my way of, some might say, stalking him, but I would say it was just to catch a glimpse of him.” She admits that when she saw David after a match in the Manchester United players’ lounge, he caught her attention because he was with his parents and displayed a strong sense of family values. She states, “When I saw him in the footballers’ lounge, all the other players were at the bar, but he was standing and talking to his parents. As someone who is very close to my own family, I loved that aspect of him.”
David, on the other hand, simply states, “I just fancied her,” when describing their first meeting. Victoria adds, “I just fancied him, it was as simple as that.”
Their initial attraction quickly blossomed into love, and the couple married just two years later in 1999 at a castle outside Dublin. They now have four children together – sons Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and daughter Harper – and after 24 years of marriage, their love for each other remains strong.
However, their relationship faced challenges in the beginning. David’s mother, Sandra, reveals in the upcoming Beckham documentary that she was concerned her son would lose focus on his career at Manchester United when he started dating Victoria. She feared that Victoria’s presence would distract him from his professional goals.
She said: ‘We’d were worried he would lose everything he worked for because football had always come first and then all of a sudden it wasn’t.’
Beckham and Victoria became a brand where they gained lucrative contracts with clothing designers, health and fitness specialists, fashion magazines, and perfume and cosmetics manufacturers.
But at the start of her relationship with David, Victoria says she was told by her manager at the time to ‘keep it under wraps’.
She said: ‘We would meet in car parks and that’s not as seedy as it sounds.’
And David appears to have a conflicting opinion to his former Man United manager Alex Ferguson, as he says of how his fame catapulted due to the interest into his relationship with Victoria: ‘It definitely didn’t change me.’
Alex, 81, then says: ‘ Well he changed. There’s no doubt about that.’
